On Tuesday afternoon (26th July 2011) a goodly muster of members gathered outside Biddle Cottage
in Nelson’s historic precinct of South Street. Our hosts, Jeanette Hancock and her husband, own more than one cottage
in the street and had agreed to show us around. It was a real delight to see the renovated interiors and experience the tranquility of the rear gardens of the homes we were able to see. Jeanette had prepared a good deal of background information for us; it was gratifying to discover that people power was the street’s salvation in 1981 when the council was petitioned to save several cottages from demolition. Since then the existing buildings have been sympathetically restored to make them very comfortable dwellings.
