Satisfying Conclusion to 2015

Thursday 26th November, 2015, at 11.30 saw many of our members gathered atWillow Bank, home of Christine Grieder, for our annual Christmas celebrations.

Events took the familiar format of meeting, quiz, lunch and “swap the present” carried out under strictly controlled conditions!

The Secretary offers a present to Christine. Do they know something we don't?

The President addresses the meeting - but is anyone listening?!

our general business was the news that Christine had been offered an album of photographs taken during the 1920’s and 30’s  from the family of George Lawrence.  These had been passed on to the Tasman District Library to be added to the reference collection.  They are now available on-line in Tasman Kete  which this link will take you to.  There are some interesting and useful photos of the Lawrence home on the terrace overlooking Wakefield and two intriguing photos  of elephants having a bathe in the river and penned beside the Wakefield Methodist Church on the corner of Edward and Arrow Street.  Our task now is to find a newspaper reference to this event in the Colonist or the Nelson Mail.image001

If anyone has further historical photos on this or other topics which could be preserved for everyone’s interest and enjoyment,  they only need to approach the Tasman District Library or a member of our committee to ensure their safe-keeping for future generations.

This was a positive note on which to end the year and one which further justifies the importance of historical societies in preserving our heritage.
